So many people fall into the trap of “I’m not very smart” just because they struggle with school. When you get frustrated, especially as a kid, it’s easy to just say fuck it and avoid the problem. The idea that you can completely avoid needing the soft skills is misguided.įor real, it sounds like he had trouble with school in childhood and that it was linked to not being a cookie cutter student (his disability comment). If nobody wants to work with you all your technical skills aren't going to change that. Random conversations with people, getting in good with managers/leads, making sure people seek you when building out focus group for a project. And most importantly you have to understand how to communicate/navigate the weird almost political heirarchy in a workplace. That is how you get promotions and increase your income. You have to write performance reviews and evaluations for peers (because they'll do the same for you). You have to get design docs approved which means convincing folks that your way of solving a problem is right and just being the technically "best" solution isn't always enough. The soft skills (communication and emotional intelligence especially) matter so damn much. I'm a Comp Science grad and been working at a FANG company for ~11 years. Speaking as an engineer who's been working for quite a while, the stuff that sets STEM grads apart from each other are the non-stem skills like language skills and communication and social awareness and a good understanding of the world we live in and how we got here.ġ00%. It could be as innocuous as having a buddy come by once a week so you have to keep your apartment clean enough to have guests, or maybe have an agreement that you send them a picture from the gym to make sure that you got off the couch.Īll of that is specifics pertaining to a certain set of needs, but generally speaking having someone you trust to help structure your process of identifying, addressing and reflecting on your situation is a good way to go about breaking down and processing your ADHD :) ![]() Someone you trust and you Can bounce ideas off of and also help you identify what you need strategies for and maybe help you maintain it some fashion. ![]() When it comes to working out what is the most sensible strategy for you, it Can be a huge help to have someone as a “sparrings partner”, so to speak. I’ve seen folks use an entire Whiteboard to plan their weeks and that shit gave me heart palpatations because it was so overwhelming for me. Like, we all need help with structure and planning, but it’s about finding out what structure works the best for you. I think finding good strategies is very much about finding strategies that work for you, specifically. Even if the symptoms are broadly similar, the mechanism Behind them could be wildly different, which makes it hard to, like, give concrete advise that worked for me to others, haha. ![]() It’s always hard to give strategies wrt ADHD to other because it’s a diagnosis that varies greatly from one person to the next.
